Iyan de Jesus
Polytechnique University of the Philippines
De Jesus is a self-taught artist whose early works are loosely influenced by steampunk, lightened by the whimsy element of poetry. Recent works have evolved to feature more natural elements, becoming softer and more open, with pastel hues and lyrical symbolism. Her paintings have been described as “mechanical romanticism”, an unconscious combination of dream-like scenes and her lack of tolerance for blurry lines. De Jesus has the uncanny ability to draw lines and circles directly on canvas, without the aid of rulers and protractors. Her love for literature organically seep into her work. The subjects of her paintings are sometimes derived from literary and historical tales, but like fractured fairytales, they are retold with plot twists infused with humor and wit.
De Jesus took Bachelor of Science in Architecture at Polytechnic University of the Philippines. She worked as an illustrator/designer soon after which also contributed to her unique aesthetic. She exhibits her works around the U.S., Europe and Asia.
