Broken White Project: Parallel Margins, an exhibition featuring six Indonesian artists, organized in collaboration with Ace House Collective. ‘Broken White Project’ is an initiative by Yogyakarta-based artists-run Ace House Collective, focusing on dialogues related to the creation of ideas and artworks, fostering creative processes through a collective work style. These dialogues, networking, and spatial partnerships with artists are an effort to find a methodological framework and to discover a formula for nurturing the creative process of artists and sustaining their artistic works.
Parallel Margins is a forum for discussing the crossover model used by artists in their artistic practice. Every artist crosses territorial boundaries in his creative process; ranging from ideas, issues and discourses, materials and media, to across regions and geographies. The orientation in this theme is: how the crosses made by artists are able to produce a more global dialogue, related to reading the potential of the region and the art world, exchanging experiences and knowledge, and finding a harmonious perspective towards building geopolitical solidarity of contemporary art in Southeast Asia.
Today, we witness a continuous process of reading and reconstructing historical narratives and cultural practices on a public to domestic scale, in relation, to explore the future challenges of Asian contemporary art. Finding its manifestation in the work practices of artists who work on personal issues in daily local contexts, this exhibition invites the audience to talk and dialogue about how socio-cultural issues in other areas reflect and cross the same issues. This is in line with the challenges faced by the contemporary art world in Southeast Asia, which is still struggling with issues of identity, historical trauma, locality, social politics, and the effects of colonialism that are still circulating today. The intersection of issues and chaos in contemporary art discourse that intersects with global culture has given rise to significant changes and tensions in the work of artists' studios.
Broken White Project: Parallel Margins, an exhibition that envisions the Philippine art scene as one of the main pillars of contemporary Asian art today. The activation of inter- spatial networks is crucial in order for us to observe the extent of art’s potential in reading the phenomena and in responding to ideas and changes in our everyday life.
