Viewing Nonchalant Still Lives.
In Geremy Samala’s in the midst of an oblivious bloom, the artist delves into his evolving creative process, showcasing a fresh approach to his work. Driven by a desire to both captivate the eye and evoke joy and contentment with each piece, Samala invites viewers to find their interpretations rather than spoon-feeding them a complete and limited idea. This exhibition represents a significant shift, as he feels more serene about the discomfort an art practice requires, coming to terms with the ebbs and flows of energies that find themselves expressed on canvas. As Samala is intensely absorbed in the series of actions required to put everything together, he embraces the notion that this lifelong process of growth and change is an integral part of his artistic identity.
The artist’s production typically begins with a simple background or landscape, which he then transforms with abstraction and intentional chaos, layering more markings, patterns, and elements, whether painted, sprayed, or outlined, until he intuitively feels a proper balance. Through this method, Samala discovered action painting, wholeheartedly enjoying the physicality of creating art beyond the confines of a seated position. Larger canvases offer a playground for more dynamic and messy creations, a departure from his earlier, more controlled works. This spontaneity and freedom have become a new source of inspiration and satisfaction for the artist.
A recurring motif in his pieces is the presence of plants—ferns, cacti, twigs, and vines—serving as familiar elements that ground his abstract explorations. Each work encapsulates a unique state of being, reflecting Samala’s personal experiences during its creation. It also harkens to his childhood, as he fondly remembers vasefuls of flowers always displayed in their home. Among his works, sunflowers appear as a homage to Van Gogh, symbolizing a connection to the artistic legacy and inspiration drawn from the great masters of both classic and contemporary art. To this, he gives his unique interpretation, applying bold swathes of vibrant color that he selectively blurs or sharpens the edges of. He also draws from his past works, as he includes elements of fiery delineations of thick orange paint, some tracing features while others are concentrated on certain points in the works, bursting into magnificent flames. Rips in his paintings also provide different views of landscapes, horizons, or clear night skies that provide cosmic connections to what lies beyond.
As Samala offers a celebration of his artistic evolution, he invites viewers to behold his journey and find their interpretations within his lively canvases that provide glimpses of life ever blooming and growing. Each painting is a testament to the constantly changing nature of art and the joy of discovery, not only for himself but for anyone lucky enough to bear witness. In each piece, the artist asks, “What do YOU see, and what do YOU think?”
