After having endured the recent passing of a loved one, the artist Miguel Paulo Borja explores the contrasting nature of the transience of life and the permanence of death in his show “Life is an afterparty and death is the hangover.” According to the artist, the show is his love letter to grief, sadness and death. Death is the great equalizer, serving as a reality check and a sobering reminder of life’s transience. In death, the superficial divisions that separate individuals fade away, emphasizing our shared vulnerability and common humanity. It is the hangover after life’s temporary celebration that prompts reflection on the fleeting nature of our existence. In death, there is comfort in finality, offering closure and an acceptance of the inevitable. Ultimately, death highlights the importance of living authentically and cherishes the present moment as it reminds us of our shared mortality.
