A Lot A-brewing
In Mad Cauldron, Arth Chavez and Gean Brix Garcia invite audiences into a vivid, explosive pot overflowing with their combined creative energies. The two artists, former classmates, and long-time friends from the EARIST Fine Arts program are unleashing a storm of color and playfulness in this two-man show. Their distinctive obsessions: Chavez’s continuing passion for interpreting past experiences and characters he meets into bold interior settings, and Garcia’s vibrant clashes of fashion, fantasy, and patterns collide in a kaleidoscope of visuals that pulse with energy and, unmistakably, joy.
With a concoction of play and exploration, the artists in their pieces usher an alchemical process that revels in creation’s spontaneity and camaraderie’s comfort. Chavez’s naughty monsters and nice cats traipse across the kitchen, creating chaos with their messy dessert preps amid the slapdash ingredients and the jumbled cookery. Garcia’s works embrace the unpredictability of the otherworldly, creating a strange landscape that feels alive not only with the movement of its characters, but the animation of the textured and eyeballed plant life that gives more than a shy peek. The pieces riff off one another, blending surreal motifs, cheeky visuals, and a mesmerizing sense of twisted rhythm.
Mad Cauldron is a glorious invitation to get lost in the originations of these two young artists, the intense pull of color and patterns giving way to a contagious thrill in the details. Here, the artists give a tiny taste that satiates, allows a guiltless visual binge, and indulges our taste for something bizarre yet undeniably scrumptious.
