In Memory Vault, an ongoing project, artist Jellyfish Kisses interprets memories that were first collected from the participants in her interactive exhibition Memory Bank. In this collection, she provides a personal approach to immortalising the delicate and multifaceted nature of human experience through various mediums that range from digital avatars to illustrative paintings.
At the core of this exhibition are recollections that are both ordinary and profound in meaning, whether interpreted in the literal sense through detailed descriptions of sensory impressions or through introspection of our internal world. The series of works reflect how the elusive and intricate qualities of memory are translated into visual form. Jellyfish Kisses draws inspiration from her own memory she shares with someone in the past – their long-lost connection and eventual reconciliation, further implying the power of memory and its ability to link the past with the present.
While some paintings depict memories with a literal approach, she combines abstract elements inspired by the vivid descriptions of sounds, smells, and emotions to create a quilt-like painting piece. In doing so, these paintings serve as contemporary depictions of personal narratives– in essence, making reference to the early tradition of painting as an act of documenting historical events before the invention of photography.
Memory Vault offers a glimpse into the absurdity of the human condition, inviting the viewers to reflect on their own realities and prompting them to either confront or refuse the burden that our memories bear. Jellyfish Kisses acknowledges how moments of existence– marked by mundane and poignant realities– are preserved through art.
